I know that what the boys eat now is not a reflection of what they’ll be amenable to eating later in their childhood but DAMN, it’s going well! They have wonderfully vast and willing palettes.
I make almost all of their food myself. We bought one of those fancy French Babycook machines which makes the process a breeze. It steams and purées everything all in a cute little machine. From there, I dole out 2 ounce portions and freeze’em up for later consumption. Needless to say, the machine is an extravagant indulgence but, hey, it inspires me to make baby food so it’s worth the expense.
Here’s a list of what the boys have willingly ingested so far:
- sweet potatoes
- leeks
- carrots (I can’t make those at home because of nitrates in the soil. Doc says buy the jarred baby food version since the makers screen nitrate levels.)
- green beans
- lentils
- bananas
- oranges
- pluots (Plum/apricot Frankenstein fruits)
- apples
- blueberries
- pears
- Jell-O (Yeah, yeah, I know. It’s got zero nutritional value. But at least it’s useful in getting Nicholas to finally eat cold food.)
- strawberries
- pineapple
- cauliflower
- prunes (Oh, thank the pooping Gods. They LOVE prunes.)
- avocado
- black beans
- corn
- yogurt (Specifically, Activia Vanilla flavour. Sebastian would sell his brother to gypsies for just one extra bite of the stuff.)
- peaches
- cottage cheese with chives
And ZABAGLIONE. They LOVE warm zabaglione*. Go figure!?
I don’t really know how much I’m supposed to be feeding these guys. They usually have a few tablespoons of cereal mixed with 2 ounces of fruits or veggies and then another bowl of something or other (usually another 3 or 4 ounces). Sometimes yogurt. Sometime fruit. Sometimes Jell-O. They have two meals a day, breakfast and dinner (on top of their regular – every 3 hours – breastfeeding).
Their doctor said I should feed them as much as they want to eat but I fear that if I do that, Sebastian will never stop eating. That boy can chow down his weight in purée. When they’re 9 months old we’ll go for their next check up (and weigh-in). I guess we’ll see then if I’ve been doing the right thing or not.
All of this aside, I suspect it will only be a short time before karma comes to bite me on the ass for having been such an insufferably picky eater as a child. If I had to guess today, Sebastian will be a good eater but Nicholas will be an intolerable, hunger-striking demon.
* I didn’t make zabaglione. We had it at a resto. But I WILL make it someday ’cause it’s SOOOO good.
