It used to stand on end. It drew comments from almost EVERYONE who’d pass us. It was his trademark.

Sebastian’s hair.

Alas, his baby duck down has grown and grown and grown. What was once a giddy porcupine became a floppy mop. And finally, it just fell. It fell into his eyes.

So, Superbowl Sunday we got down to business. I got some shiny new shears and Dada wrangled the little monkey onto his lap for the symbolic first haircut.

There’s no doubt that he is a full fledged toddler now.

And, in case you’re wondering, Nicholas is still holding fast to his hair. I think he’s got several more weeks before the big chop, chop.

Imitation is the sincerest form of mimicry

As your children start developing a personality, it’s awfully tempting to try to fit them in a box. Namely a hereditary box. We see (or try to see, I guess) ourselves in their actions. We try to figure out where they may have “picked that up”. For instance, the way Nicholas gets frustrated and throws a sh*t fit kinda, sorta, maybe looks like something his mom might do. And maybe, kinda, perhaps, Sebastian’s short attention span resembles his dad’s.

And then, sometimes, their behaviour so obviously, so unquestionably, originates from one of us that it’s a veritable impersonation. Sorta, kinda, maybe a caricature.

Most mornings I go to the park with the boys. We play on the swings and in the sandbox. And, on our way home, Sebastian often falls asleep. Sometimes, he does that with his favourite toy in hand.
