The playpen in the living room is becoming less and less relevant as the boys get older and their wanderlust grows. They’re still amenable to spending a little bit of time in there but the activities therein are becoming more and more unruly. One of those activities, aside from the de rigueur chuck-EVERYTHING-out-of-the-playpen game, (Hey lookit Mama/Dada picking it up again!) involves Nicholas squeezing himself into the overflowing toy basket and proactively reaffirming the laws of displacement.

The pleasure is fleeting, because, soon enough, he runs out of toys to chuck but I think that’s half the fun. The game has a start and an end.

And, sometimes, as a bonus, he rediscovers a long lost favourite in the process.

The world’s cutest fishmongers

We have a membership at the Bay Area Discovery Museum. One of the fun things that the boys can do there is play in a pretend stream with plastic fishies and froggies. We tried that for the first time this week. I think they liked it.

You can’t really tell from the photos but, despite the aprons, both of them were sopping wet (and COLD) by the time we were done.

As your children start developing a personality, it’s awfully tempting to try to fit them in a box. Namely a hereditary box. We see (or try to see, I guess) ourselves in their actions. We try to figure out where they may have “picked that up”. For instance, the way Nicholas gets frustrated and throws a sh*t fit kinda, sorta, maybe looks like something his mom might do. And maybe, kinda, perhaps, Sebastian’s short attention span resembles his dad’s.

And then, sometimes, their behaviour so obviously, so unquestionably, originates from one of us that it’s a veritable impersonation. Sorta, kinda, maybe a caricature.

I know that you Montrealers will snicker with derision at this post but, dang, it’s cold here! There’s been snow and stuff.

It’s almost 11 am and, despite what the forecast says, it’s not warming up. See?

(Two Celsius is equal to 35 Fahrenheit, if you prefer)

The trouble is, I don’t really have good clothes for the boys in these temperatures. We have some warm coats up in Tahoe but here, we’re stuck layering fleece upon fleece until I’ve got a matching pair of little Bibendums (aka Michelin man). It’s not ideal.

The other problem is that, since it’s so chilly and since we’re so badly dressed, we can’t spend any length of time outside. Result: Goose is REALLY getting the short end of the stick. He’s not getting out and it’s driving him nuts.

Yesterday, he decided that he would walk on the coffee table (TWICE!) to see if I was paying attention. Sigh.
